Motorola’s Razr brings the classic flip-phone silhouette into the smartphone era with a foldable design that closes into a compact square and opens to a tall 6.2-inch pOLED display. A smaller 2.7-inch Quick View screen on the outside handles notifications, shortcuts and simple tasks without unfolding the device, which gives the phone a distinct rhythm compared with conventional slabs. Its Snapdragon 710 processor is paired with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, a combination that suits everyday communication, streaming and app use more than heavy flagship workloads. The 16 MP main camera is supported by autofocus, optical stabilization features and dual LED flash, while a 5 MP internal camera is available for selfies and video calls. Motorola also includes a fingerprint reader, NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi ac and eSIM support, with no physical SIM tray. Battery capacity sits at 2510 mAh and charging tops out at 15 W over USB-C. At 205 g, the Razr is not especially light, but its unusually slim 6.9 mm unfolded profile and pocket-friendly folded shape remain the real highlights of the device.

Pros

  • Looks and feels like the old Razr: The old Razr was cool and the newest iteration of this iconic phone feels and looks just as good. No one who knows the original Razr would mistake the new one to be anything other than a Moto Razr.
  • Folds completely flat: Unlike the Samsung foldables, the screen on the Moto Razr folds completely flat with no gaps between the two sides of the phone. This is thanks to a unique hinge design that allows the screen to retract into the bottom bezel while folding. This greatly reduces the chances of dirt or debris entering and damaging the screen over time.
  • Runs a smooth version of Android: Motorola usually runs a smooth and clutter-free version of android on its phones and the Razr is no exception.
  • Sufficient battery life: The Razr has a slightly small 2510 mAh battery. That said, with a less powerful processor to power as well as a camera with no extra gimmicks, the smaller battery seems plenty enough for a full work day. Thankfully, the Moto Razr does have fast charging via USB C.

Cons

  • The hinge apparently creaks: Though this does not seem to be a design flaw and is in fact the result of the mechanism being durable and stiff, it still feels weird to buy a folding phone that creaks at the hinges.
  • The screen has lumps and bumps: The unique hinge design, which makes the phone fold completely flat, adds a lumpy texture in the middle of the screen. Though it feels a bit weird, apparently the lumps and bumps are normal!
  • The camera is basic at best: Despite the 16MP sensor, the camera only does a passable job in simple, well lit conditions. Sadly, the camera is not good at taking indoor, low-light or night pictures.
  • Expensive and only available with Telus, Koodo and Public Mobile: The various disadvantages we have just listed might seem even more galling considering the phone is currently retailing with Telus and Koodo at a minimum of $1759 over two years and at $1990 with Freedom Mobile. The Razr is also only available with these providers and therefore upgrading to this phone is not possible for those who would like to stay with other providers.
